Fort Opau
Fort Opau was the last of the 6-inch forts to be built in Wellington. Started in 1941, Fort Opau was built to cover the dead water that the 9.2 inch battery at wrights hill couldn't target. It was sited at the top of a cliff about 600 feet high. Two emplacements were built, each housing one 6-inch gun. These guns had a range of about 15 kilometres. Provision for personnel accommodation (and associated facilities) were constructed in a valley behind the battery.

At first it was intended that the battery would be serviced with an underground magazine, along with the facilities associated with such a plan, this was later dispensed with. Plans for searchlights were also rejected in favour for a radar station. Once completed, the fort was operational until June 1944 when the guns were removed.
