Obscured By Clouds
1- Obscured By Clouds
Written by: Waters, Gilmour
Running Time: 3:05
Rating: ****
Comments: The opening track to this amazing sound-track.  It's a terrifict instrumental, and a good introduction to the type of music on the album.

2- When You're In
Written by: Mason, Gilmour, Waters, Wright
Running Time: 2:31
Rating: ****
Comments:  Basically just a continuation of the first track, this song gets into a more rock n' roll type rhythm.

3- Burning Bridges
Written by: Waters, Wright
Running Time: 3:30
Rating: ****
Comments:  This song has a great melody, but it's not incredibly strong.  It serves the whole of the album though, as it's melody is reprised later on.  It's a good, soft song, with soft lyrics.
Lyrics:

bridges burning
brightly merging with the shadow
flickering between the lines
stolen moments floating softly on the air
borne on wings of fire and climbing higher
ancient bonds are breaking
moving on and changing sides
dreaming of a new day
cast aside the other way
magic visions stirring
kindled by and burning
flames rise in her eyes

the door that stands ajar
the walls that once were high
beyond the gilded cage
beyond the reach of time
the moment is at hand
she breaks the golden band
4- The Gold, It's In The...
Written by: Waters, Gilmour
Running Time: 3:08
Rating: ****
Comments:  This song is simple rock n' roll.  It's nothing special, but it does have some great guitar work and a good beat.
Lyrics:

come on my friends, let's make for the hills
they say there's gold and i'm looking for thrills
you can get your hands on whatever we find
cause i'm only coming along for the ride

well you go your way, i'll go mine
i don't care if we get there on time
everybody's searching for something, they say
i'll get my kicks on the way

over the mountains, across the sea
who knows what may be waiting for me
i could sail forever to strange sounding names
faces of people and places don't change

all i have to do is just close my eyes
to see the sea gulls wheeling in the far distant skies
all i wanna tell you all i wanna say
is count me in on the journey, don't expect me to stay
5- Wots...Uh The Deal
Written by: Waters, Gilmour
Running Time: 5:09
Rating: *****
Comments: Like "Bridges Burning" it's a soft and simple melody, but there's a beauty to it that it takes a few listens to really appreciate.  The lyrics are equally beautiful.  This is just a great, flawless song.
Lyrics:

heaven sent the promised land
looks alright from where i stand
'cause i'm the man on the outside looking in
waiting on the first step
show me where the key is kept
point me down the right line
because it's time

to let me in from the cold
turn my lead into gold
'cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
and i think i'm growing old

flash the readies...wot's...uh deal
got to make it to the next meal
try to keep up with the turning of the wheel
mile after mile, stone after stone
you turn to speak, but you're alone
million miles from home, you're on your own

so let me in from the cold
turn my lead into gold
'cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
and i think i'm growing old

fire bright by candle light
with her by my side
if she prefers we need never stir again
someone sent the promised land
well i grabbed it with both hands
now i'm the man on the inside looking out

hear me shout, come on in
what's the news, where you've been
'cause there's no wind left in my soul
and i've grown old
6- Mudmen
Written by: Wright, Gilmour
Running Time: 4:18
RANKING: #18 ******
Comments: It's a crime that such an unbelievably intense and amazing song can go unrecognised.  Nobody knows what this song is, but it's easily one of Pink Floyd's best.  It gets 10 times better every time you listen to it.  It's pure ecstacy, and nothing less.

7- Childhood's End
Written by: Gilmour
Running Time: 4:33
Rating: *****
Comments: Gilmour's solo contribution to this album is a wonderful masterpiece of lyric and song.  This track starts out with a synthesizer growing louder until a faint beat can be heard, then the guitars come on, and finally, the excellent lyrics begin.  This is a great song to sing along to, and one of the best songs on the album.
Lyrics:

you shout in your sleep
perhaps the price is just too steep
is your conscience at rest
if once put to the test?
you awake with a start
to just the beating of your heart
just one man beneath the sky
just two ears, just two eyes

you set sail across the sea
of long past thoughts and memories
childhood's end your fantasies
merge with harsh realities
and then as the sail is hoist
you find your eyes are growing moist
and all the fears never voiced
say you have to make the final choice

who are you and who am i
to say we know the reason why?
some are born, some men die
beneath one infinite sky
there'll be war, there'll be peace
but everything one day will cease
all the iron turned to rust
all the proud men turned to dust
and so all things time will mend
and so this song will end
8- Free Four
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:16
Rating: *****
Comments:  Waters's solo contribution to this album is just as good as Gilmour's before it.  This has a greath rhythm, with clapping in the background, and great lyrics.  This song even works well on it's own, without the rest of the album.
Lyrics:

one two free four
the memories of a man in his old age
are the deeds of a man in his prime
you shuffle in the gloom of a sick room
and talk to yourself as you die

and life is a short warm moment
and death is a long cold rest
you get your chance to try
in the twinkling of an eye
eighty years, with luck, or even less

so all aboard for the american tour
and maybe you'll make it to the top
but mind how you go
and i can tell you 'cause i know
you may find it hard to get off

but you are the angel of death
and i am the dead man's son
he was buried like a mole in a fox-hole
and everyone's still on the run
and who is the master of foxhounds?
and who says the hunt has begun?
who calls the tune in the courtroom?
and who beats the funeral drum?

the memories of a man in his old age
are the deeds of a man in his prime
you shuffle in the gloom of a sick room
and talk to yourself as you die
9- Stay
Written by: Wright, Waters
Running Time: 4:07
Rating: ****
Comments: Another nice, soft melody to help the album reach its close.  Like most of the other songs, it's not much on it's own, but it sounds great in its own context.
Lyrics:

stay
and help me to end the day
and if you don't mind
we'll break a bottle of wine
stick around
and maybe we'll put one down
'cause i want to find
what lies behind those eyes

midnight blue, burning gold
a yellow moon, is growing cold

i rise
looking through my morning eyes
surprised
to find you by my side
rack my brain
and try to remember your name
to find
the words to tell you goodbye

morning dues, new born day
midnight blue, turned to grey
midnight blue, burning gold
a yellow moon, is growing cold
10- Absolutely Curtains
Written by: Mason, Gilmour, Waters, Wright
Running Time: 5:51
Rating: ***
Comments:  This final instrumental sounds like it is building up to something for most of it.  Finally, when the music breaks, there is no major climax, but a new melody entirely.  It is native tribe chanting, and it goes on until its abrupt stop to finish the album in a most eccentric way.  Despite its strangeness, it's a good song, and the perfect ending to this incredible soundtrack.

Released: 1972 by Harvest Records
Running Time: 40:28
Ranking: #10 out of 14 studio albums
Album Highlight: Mudmen
Album Weak Point: Absolutely Curtains
Average Song Rating: ****
Comments:  While this album is the soundtrack to a foreign film, you don't have to know anything about the film to enjoy this music.  This is actually a very good album, with much consistency between the songs.  There are a few stand-outs, all in a row from the brilliant "Mudmen" to the fun "Free Four".  The lyrics probably don't mean as much if you are unaware of the plot, but you can still follow the basic ideas they put forth.  Together, the words and music make for some excellent songs, soundtrack or not.
