WikiWiki

The first wiki I stumbled across was the original WikiWiki:

Its theme is people, projects, patterns, xtreme programming (XP). If you are interested in online communities, however, you might want to check out the MeatballWiki. I like the Meatball theme much better. ^_^

WikiWiki refers to the original WikiWiki only. A wiki is a web site running a WikiEngine.

The features of a real wiki:

• It has a topic.
• It has pages.
• The pages are very simple to edit.
• The most prevalent convention requires the page name to be a WikiName.
• Linking of pages is done automatically. Every instance of a WikiName links to the corresponding page.
• The text must conform to a number of LayoutRules. These rules determine how the text will be translated into HTML.
• Automatic HTML generation from plain text reduces layout flexibility.

In a collaborative wiki, the page collection reflects a consensual view of what the wiki is about. Most wikis are collaborative wikis.

This particular wiki (the pages your are reading right now) is not a collaborative wiki: It is part my HomePage and only editable by me. I use my WikiMode to do that. The result is a true HyperText. The BookMetaphor is no longer adequate to describe it.
