Police seize large stash of explosive material

JAKARTA (JP): In the second such find in a week, policeTuesday seized an enormous stash of ammonium nitrate, an explosive material that was used in the deadly Oct. 12 bombings on Bali island, AP reported.

Officers found nearly half a ton of the chemical, which is also used as fertilizer, in a house in Palu, Southeast Sulawesi, said police Lt. Col. HakaAstana.

The owner of the house is being questioned over the find, he added.

Ammonium nitrate can be mixed with fuel oil to make a powerful explosive. It was the substance used in the blasts in Bali that killed at least 190 people, mostlyforeigners.

Ammonium nitrate is widely used by Indonesian farmers, while fishermen also use the substance to make bombs to stun fish. Its sale is restricted, and it is a crime to possess it without a license.
