Police can't determine nature of Makassar's explosions
JAKARTA (JP): Police remained tightlipped on Friday morning about the nature of the
three separate explosions that rocked the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar the
previous night.
But the management of a McDonald's fastfood outlet, where one of the explosions
took place and killed three people, insisted that it was not a bomb.
The explosion came from a stove in McDonald's kitchen, the management told
reporters.
Police have cordoned off the entire Ratu Indah shopping mall which housed the
McDonald's restaurant as they carried out the investigation.
Investigations are also still taking place in the car showroom on Jl. Urip Sumiharjo,
where the second explosion took place later in the evening.
The third, smaller explosion occured minutes later also on Jl. Sumiharjo when a
package apparently fell off a motorbyke.
There were no injuries in the later two explosions.
Police have identified two of the victims, a patron and a security guard. The third
victim, a man in his late 30s, had still to be identified.
The explosions took place as the largely Muslim residents of Makassar were
celebrating Idul Fitri, which marks the end of the Ramadhan fasting month.
