JI role in Bali blast is fact: Indonesian antiterror chief
JAKARTA (JP): Head of the security ministry's antiterrorism coordinating desk
Inspector General Amsad Embay said here on Monday that involvement of the
Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) regional militant network in the Bali bombing was a fact.
"Findings of the investigation team show that the involvement of JI is a fact," Amsad
told Radio El Shinta, as quoted by AFP. "The arrested perpetrators belong to JI," he
added.
Amsad said the refusal of other authorities to directly link the October 12 blast in
Bali's popular tourist Kuta strip with JI was due to "cautiousness".
He said two Indonesian clerics, Abu Bakar Ba'asyir and the late Abdullah Sungkar,
had founded the group. Ba'asyir has been in detention in Jakarta since October 20 on
charges of treason and over a series of bomb attacks two years ago.
Thirty people have been arrested over the Bali bombing, which killed more than 190
people, mostly foreigners. They include five main suspects and four would-be suicide
bombers. Ten people, including three Malaysians, are on the wanted list.
