Maluku separatist leader released from detention
JAKARTA (JP): Leader of the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM) Alexander Manuputty
was released on Saturday from detention at the National Police Headquarters, El
Shinta reported.
Another FKM activist, Sammy Wailerumi, was also released from detention, said
lawyer Christian Rahardjaan.
"That's nothing unusual. They were released because their detention period was over,"
he said.
Both Alex and Sammy are still required to report to the police and attend their trials.
They are charged with subversion, which carries a maximum penalty of life
imprisonment.
Alex and Sammy have been in detention since March. The Criminal Code stipulates
that authorities must release a defendant who has been in detention for a specified
period. However, the release does mean that charges against the defendant have
been dropped.
