Bombers Planned Christmas Eve Bombing
14 Dec 2002 21:19:44 WIB
TEMPO Interaktif, Makassar, South Sulawesi:The police are convinced that the
Makassar bombers planned to carry out another bombing on Christmas and New
Year's Eve this year.
South Sulawesi police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani asked the public to stay alert as
the police assumed that the group still has 40 more bomb detonators.
Gani made this statement in a press conference held at the South Sulawesi police
detectives center in Makassar on Saturday (14/12).
According to Gani, Makassar bombing suspects Usman and Ilham have already
confessed to this bombing plan.
"They have already prepared the bomb container, the TNT explosive material for the
bombs, bomb detonators and bombing sketches. Some other suspects have also
said that they would carry out such an activity on Christmas Eve this year," stated
Gani.
Gani added that the group ordered 50 bomb detonators through another bombing
suspect Kahar Mustafa.
Ten of the detonators have been assembled as bombs.
Two of these bombs exploded in Poso, Central Sulawesi and two others in Makassar.
Two more were sent to Manado, North Sulawesi.
Meanwhile, the remaining four bombs were taken a fugitive suspect Agung Hamid.
One bomb was recently found in front of a house that is often used as a prayer room.
"It's very dangerous if the public decides to be against us in this matter. We only have
two choices: these perpetrators destroy South Sulawesi or Makassar people or we
destroy these perpetrators," stated Gani.
Gani also said that the recent bomb, which was found on Friday (13/12), was one of
the bombs owned by Agung Hamid's group.
The recent bomb looked similar to the type of bomb that exploded at the McDonald's
restaurant. (Muannas-Tempo News Room)
