TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: Alex Manuputty and Samuel Waileruny, two leaders of
the Maluku Sovereignty Front (FKM), were released from the National Police
headquarters detention center in Jakarta at 00.00am on Saturday (28/12).
Manuputty and Waileruny are suspects in the South Maluku Republic (RMS) coup
d'état case.
"Their detention time is over. The police acknowledge Manuputty's rights," said
Manuputty's lawyer Saor Siagian.
Up to 9 pm on Friday (27/12), Siagian said, the trial held at North Jakarta District
Court has yet to finish the reading of two suspects' defense as Manuputty had a
575-page defense to read.
The lawyers then requested the police to release the two suspects on the same night
as the detention of Manuputty and Waileruny ended on December 27, 2002, as
ordered by Jakarta High Court.
Brig. Gen. Aryanto Sutadi, Head of the National Police HQ trans national and security
department, told Tempo News Room on Saturday afternoon (28/12) that the release of
Manuputty and Waileruny from detention was not carried out on the authority of the
police.
"We were only asked to detain the two suspects in our place. We really don't know
when the order was issued," stated Sutadi.
He admitted that he did not know about the court's official letter ordering Manuputty
and Waileruny's to be detained at the National Police HQ.
Therefore, when the new court order arrived ordering the release of the two suspects,
the police immediately released them on Saturday (28/12) at 00.00 am.
Regarding the possibility that Manuputty and Waileruny might run away before the
next trial on Monday (30/12), Sutadi said," Well, that's a risk we have to take. We had
to release them due to the new court order. We will pursue them if they run away."
