 There
are several reasons why we are intending to keep bees.
- Having plentiful bees will help pollinate the fruit tress and other
plants. Research shows that this can increase fruit tree yields by up to
33%. Many fruit tree farmers actually import bee hives to their orchard just
for this reason.
- We tend to use honey as a sweetener and avoid refined sugar where ever
practical. We calculated that we consume about 120lbs of honey per year. An
average hive produces about 50 lbs of honey, so we are looking at keeping
about 4 hives.
- In addition to the honey, they also produce bees wax and propolis from
which we can produce medicinal balms.
- Finally bees have been disappearing and the biggest problems seem to be
with the large producers where they have literally hundreds of hives.
Hopefully our few hives may make a minor contribution to replace the planets
