Ms. Malta's 2nd Grade
Hello all,
Greetings from Louisiana. My class and I had a great time discussing
what to tell you all about our community. We live in a city called
Mandeville. It is about 30 minutes north of New Orleans, on the north
shore of Lake Pontchartrain. To get to New Orleans (or the south shore,
as we call it), you have to drive across the Pontchartrain Causeway,
which is the longest over water bridge in the world.
Mandeville is a city of about 10,000 people. It is a very pretty
place. It's land is flat, but there are a lot of trees. We have a lot
of wildlife here including deer, pelicans, egrets, raccoons, snakes, and
alligators. We are close to many important community buildings, like
the fire station, police station, library, and hospital. The nearest
airport is in New Orleans, 37 miles away, and the nearest hospital is
only 10 miles away. The nearest swimming pool is only about 10 yards
away, we have one at our school! In our community we have a lot of
doctors, lawyers, engineers, and business owners.
Our school is a small private school with grades K-7th. We also have a
preschool with classes for 2 year olds - 5 year olds. We have about 350
students in our school. In our 2nd grade class, we have 16 students, 9
boys and 7 girls. We don't have a school bus, so almost all of our kids
get to school by car. A few who live close walk or ride bikes. Our
school has a wonderful international program. Many of our families work
for Shell Oil in New Orleans, so they are transferred here from places
overseas. In our class alone we have 4 Dutch students from the
Netherlands, 2 students from England, and 1 from Scotland. The Dutch
kids even have a Dutch teacher and keep up with their Dutch lessons for
when they go back to Holland.
Hope you enjoyed hearing about our community. We can't wait to learn
about where you live.
