Community Report

Hello,

Windsor is a city in the province of Ontario in Canada. It is Canada’s southernmost city, lying in the extreme southwest corner of Ontario where the Detroit River flows out of Lake St. Clair.

The USA as a whole is generally South of Canada, however across the Detroit River, to the North of Windsor (yes, the North) lies the city of Detroit in the state of Michigan, USA. Windsor and Detroit are linked by the Ambassador Bridge over the river, and by the Windsor-Detroit tunnel, which is under the river. Interestingly, the Ambassador bridge is the world’s longest suspension bridge that links two countries! Some Windsor residents work in Detroit and they use the bridge and tunnel on a regular basis. Many others work in the auto industry in Windsor.

The city is sometimes called "the automotive capital of Canada" because of the large auto industry.

Gordon McGregor is a Kindergarten-to-Eighth grade school in Windsor, with approximately 600 students. To get to and from school, many students take the bus, or walk. Other students are driven to and fro by their parents. The school is not too far from Windsor’s downtown area. Nearby landmarks of interest include hospitals, a fire station, a police station, public libraries, indoor swimming pools, playgrounds, hotels, an art gallery, soccer fields, and baseball diamonds. In our Grade 2 class there are 19 students, (11 boys and 8 girls). In addition to having a great time learning in the classroom, we like to play hockey, go tobogganing, build snow people and go ice skating. Although English and French are the two official languages of Canada, English is spoken by most people living in Windsor. Some students at our school learn French in some of their classes, but English is the language spoken in our class.

Visitors frequently comment on the vibrant atmosphere at our school. We are very community minded, and the parents of our students actively support school activities. Some parents volunteer their services in the classroom (as helpers), some act as group leaders on field trips, and many attend school-wide events. We like our school and our city a lot, and hope you can visit sometime in the future! Have fun with the project , eh?
