THE GRIFFIN SIDE OF THE COIN
Found my earliest known Griffin in Washington Co, AL in the late 1790's and the 1800's.

     GRIFFIN, James P, b. between 1760-1770, d. after 1837, m.-Nancy Williford
(I have reason to believe that this was his second wife)

          Children:

               GRIFFIN, Rebecca m. a MEASLES

               GRIFFIN, Mary m. a MEASLES

               GRIFFIN, Elizabeth m. a BREWNER

               GRIFFIN, RILEY

               GRIFFIN, James

               GRIFFIN, Gilbert

               GRIFFIN, Lucinda

GRIFFIN, David Hobson b. ca. 1822-23 in AL, m. 4th, Mar, 1845 to GRIMES, Nancy
                    in Washington Co, AL

               GRIFFIN, Michael

               GRIFFIN, Sterling

               GRIFFIN, Clarinda m. a REYNOLDS

Notes for GRIFFIN, James P:  His will states that he is not mentioning the names of all his children
because he had already settled with them, so there are apparently more children than listed.
In the District of San Esteban De Tombecbe, MS Territory (later Washington Co, AL) in 1797
Spanish Census besides James GRIFFIN, there is listed a Samuel GRIFFIN 76.  I suspect this may
be father, grandfather, or uncle of James.  Samuel and Mrs GRIFFIN are shown to have 1 child
living at home and James and Mrs GRIFFIN have 5 children living at home at this time.  James and
Samuel are listed on the 1803 Personal Tax Roll.  Samuel and a William are listed on the 1805
Taxable Property and James has listed 640 acres of land-third quality, situated on the west side
of the Tombigbee River, on the waters of Smith Creek with two cabins and 22 acres of
improved land thereon, assessed to 50 cents per acre.  I do not find Samuel listed again.
James signs a petition in 1808 in the Chickesawhay River.  James signs a petition in 1809.
In 1810, the only GRIFFIN listed in the census is Jesse.  In the 1850 Washington Co, AL
Census, I find three of James Griffin's sons:  David, James, and Gilbert.
