Double Success For Clijsters
Following her dissapointing second round loss to world number two Lindsay Davenport at the US Open, Kim Clijsters seems to be far over that. Clijsters put out a great performance at two tournaments back-to-back at the Seat Open (the tournament in which she won last year), and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Although she went out in the first round of doubles with partner Laurence Courtois, Clijsters made it to the quarters of the Seat Open in Luxembourg and lost to pin-up queen Anna Kournikova. Like most of Anna's matches, this one took three sets! Ofcourse getting to the quarters of a tournament should be regarded as great for anyone, but the next week Clijsters reached the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix beating 3 seeded players en route (Kournikova, Conchita Martinez, and Nathalie Tauziat)! She lost 6-0 6-3 in the final to Swiss Miss and world no. 1 Martina Hingis.
So Clijsters didn't get the car, but don't think she is is bitter! "I had so much fun this week and it was great that the tournament gave me a wild card," she said. "Martina has a lot of experience and hits the ball so clean, she's got an answer to play every player and that's why she's No. 1."
And what did Hingis think of the girl who could possibly follow in her footsteps? "Kim reminded me of myself four years ago when I was standing in the final as a young player." Maybe Clijsters will be saying those same words of some other phenom in four years!
Upcoming Tournaments
For the first time, Kim Clijsters will be the 1st seed at a tournament. While it's nothing new to Martina, Lindsay, and Venus, this is a great occasion for celebration amongst Clijsters' fans! The tournament is Eurotel Slavak in Bratislava and it starts October 23. The only other tournament Clijsters is confirmed to play so far is Sparkassen Cup in Leipzig which starts October 30th.
