The French Open runner-up, Clijsters won her first title of the year at Stanford two weeks ago. The 18-year-old Belgian also was runner-up at Indian Wells and the Heineken Trophy this year. Davenport took out her second straight Russian, having beaten Nadia Petrova in straight-set tiebreakers in the second round. Davenport beat Bedanova and Petrova at the Ericsson Open in March. Bedanova had upset No. 13 Barbara Schett of Austria in the second round. A two-time winner here, Davenport is trying to improve upon last week at San Diego, where she lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Venus Williams. Last year, Davenport lost here in the final to Serena Williams. The 25-year-old enjoys playing in her home state, where she has captured seven of her 33 titles. She resides in Laguna Beach. Davenport reached the final at Stanford two weeks ago, losing in three sets to Clijsters. Seles barely maintained her mastery of Testud in a third-round matchup. The American is 9-3 with seven straight wins over Testud, who won the first set and had a chance to win the second. Seles is gunning for her fourth title here, having won in 1990, 1991 and 1997. After struggling with a foot injury during the spring, Seles advanced to the semifinals at Stanford and the final at San Diego in the past two weeks. In other third-round action, No. 5 Nathalie Tauziat of France rebounded from being blanked in the second set to beat Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia, 6-0, 0-6, 6-2.
