Kim Clijsters Into Week 2 of US Open

For the third straight Grand Slam, Kim Clijsters is into week two. Even with a quad injury, she has been able to play the amazing tennis that has propelled her into the no. 5 ranking and the 5th seeding. On this Monday afternoon, she plays Russian Elena Dementieva. Here are Kim’s results and statistics of week one:

R3: Kim Clijsters def. Henrieta Nagyova 6-3 7-5

Of the top seeds at the 2001 US Open, Belgium's Kim Clijsters has received perhaps the least amount of attention. That could soon change. The No. 5 seed won in consecutive sets for the third straight round, this time dumping No. 23 seed Henrieta Nagyova with precision, line-hugging ground strokes which helped produce a 28-15 advantage in winners. Clijsters broke Nagyova at 5-5 in the second set before closing out the match. Clijsters next plays either No. 11 Elena Dementieva.

-In their one previous head-to-head, a fourth-round meeting in the 2001 French Open, Clijsters prevailed over Nagyova in three sets.

-Clijsters, playing in her third US Open, has made it to the fourth round for the first time.

-Clijsters has had a successful Grand Slam season to date. She made the fourth round at the Australian Open, finished runner-up at the French Open and reached Wimbledon's quarterfinals.

R2: Kim Clijsters def. Allison Bradshaw 6-3 6-2

Belgium's Kim Clijsters is proving herself more than worthy of the best seeding she's had yet at the US Open. The No. 5 seed needed only 45 minutes to eliminate American Allison Bradshaw Thursday morning at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The 18-year-old Clijsters, who lost in the second round of last year's Open, squares off in the third round against No. 25 seed Henrieta Nagyova, a second round winner over Nathalie Dechy Thursday.

R1: Kim Clijsters def. Pavlina Nola 6-1 6-1

No. 5 seed Kim Clijsters needed just 48 minutes to move into the US Open's second round, overwhelming New Zealand's Pavlina Nola at Arthur Ashe Stadium Tuesday morning. The 18-year-old Belgian dominated every aspect of the match, winning 60 total points compared to 34 for Nola. Clijsters' next challenge will be to avoid a second-round stumble, a fate she befell in the 2000 Open.
