Clijsters, Dokic Advance at Princess Cup



Belgium's Kim Clijsters and Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic each posted straight-sets victories Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $565,000 Princess Cup tennis event.

Clijsters, the top seed, routed Cara Black of Zimbabwe, 6-0, 6-3, while Dokic, the third seed, defeated Russian teenager Lina Krasnoroutskaya, 6-4, 6-4.

Clijstera had an easy time in her first match since losing to eventual champion Venus Williams of the United States two weeks ago in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.

Both Clijsters and Dokic received first-round byes here.

Clijsters is gunning for her second WTA title of the year. The 18-year-old French Open finalist captured the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, California in July.

In Friday's quarterfinals, Clijsters will battle No. 7 Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, who held on to beat Nicole Pratt of Australia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Dokic also is attempting to win her second title in 2001. She beat Amelie Mauresmo of France to win the Italian Open claycourt title in May.

The teenager advanced to the final of last week's Brasil Open before falling to American Monica Seles.

Dokic will meet America Meilen Tu, who rallied to defeat South African Liezel Huber, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 7-5.

France's Sandrine Testud and Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario will square off in the last eight.

The fourth-seeded Testud got past local favorite Saori Obata, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1. The fifth-seeded Sanchez-Vicario, who suffered a second-round loss last week at the Big Island Championships in Hawaii, edged Croatian Silvija Talaja, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (9-7).

In the only quarterfinal featuring two unseeded players, Gala Leon Garcia of Spain will meet Ai Sugiyama of Japan.

Leon Garcia beat qualifier Miho Saeki of Japan, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, while Sugiyama thrilled the home crowd with her 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Joanette Kruger of South Africa.

First prize is $90,000.
