Clijsters, Dokic Reach Semis in Tokyo

TOKYO (AP) -- Kim Clijsters and Jelena Dokic won in straight sets Friday to set up a semifinal in the Toyota Princess Cup.

The top-seeded Clijsters scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in a 51-minute match at Ariake Tennis Coliseum.

A steady rain prompted the roof over center court to be shut for the first time in the tournament.

``I was seeing the ball well and feel pretty comfortable playing indoors,'' said Clijsters, who advanced to the final of this year's French Open.

Dokic, seeded third, relied on a solid serve in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Meilan Tu of the United States. Dokic will face Clijsters in Saturday's first semifinal.

Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario defeated France's Sandrine Testud 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) and will face Spain's Gala Leon Garcia in the other semifinal. Garcia took advantage of several unforced errors en route to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Japan's Ai Sugiyama.

Second-seeded Monica Seles withdrew after the start of the tournament. Defending champion Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Amy Frazier pulled out before the start because of the terrorist attacks.

Clijsters, Dokic Move Into Semifinals at Princess Cup

TOKYO (TICKER) -- Kim Clijsters of Belgium and Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia routed their respective opponents Friday to reach the semifinals of the $565,000 Princess Cup tennis event.

Clijsters, the top seed, rolled over Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, the seventh seed, 6-3, 6-1, while Dokic, the third seed, cruised past American Meilen Tu, 6-2, 6-2.

In Saturday's semifinals, Clijsters will battle Dokic. In an all-Spanish affair, the fifth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario will meet the unseeded Gala Leon Garcia, who each won their quarterfinal matches.

Clijsters has had consecutive easy matches in her first tournament since losing to eventual champion Venus Williams of the United States two weeks ago in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.

Both Clijsters and Dokic received first-round byes here.

Clijsters is gunning for her second WTA title of the year. The 18-year-old French Open finalist captured the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, California in July.

Dokic also is attempting to win her second title in 2001. She beat Amelie Mauresmo of France to win the Italian Open claycourt title in May.

The teenager advanced to the final of last week's Brasil Open before falling to American Monica Seles.

Former world No. 1 Sanchez-Vicario held on to beat France's Sandrine Testud, the fourth seed, on Friday, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Leon Garcia got past Ai Sugiyama of Japan, 6-4, 6-3.

First prize is $90,000.
