Top Seed Clijsters Advances at Sparkassen CupThe Belgian Clijsters, who received a bye through the second round, coasted to a 6-3, 6-3 victory and will meet another Italian, fifth seed Silvia Farina Elia, on Friday. Two other seeded players, however, made second-round exits on Thursday. Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova rallied to defeat third seed Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0, and Anastasia Myskina topped fellow Russian and ninth seed Anna Kournikova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Germany's Anke Huber is facing Luxembourg's Anne Kremer for the remaining berth in the round of eight. No. 2 Nathalie Tauziat of France and No. 7 Elena Dementieva of Russia advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. In a clash of WTA Tour veterans, Tauziat outlasted Spain's Angeles Montolio, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4, to reach at least the quarterfinal stages for the ninth time in her 17 tournaments this year. Tauziat, who will retire at the end of the season, won this title two years ago and appeared in the final in 1998. Tauziat reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open three weeks ago and won her lone title of year in June at the DFS Classic at Birmingham, England. Dementieva rallied from a set down to beat compatriot Elena Likhovtseva, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. The champion takes home $90,000. |
