Kim Gets World Sports Nomination



Movie stars converge on Hollywood for the Academy Awards this weekend. Stars of the sports stage convened in Manhattan today [March 19] to announce the nominees for the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards, which are known as the "Academy Awards Of Sports," and are selected by an academy of former world-class athletes.

Top-ranked Jennifer Capriati, second-ranked Venus Williams, Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam, Dutch swimmer Inge de Bruijn and pole vaulter Stacy Dragila were nominated for World Sportswoman of the Year award. Capriati captured the World Comeback of the Year for 2001.

Cyclist Lance Armstrong, sprinter Maurice Greene, golfer Tiger Woods, German Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher and Australian swim sensation Ian Thorpe are the nominees for World Sportsman of the Year.

The 2001 French Davis Cup team, which defeated host Australia on grass to claim the Davis Cup championship in December, will battle the NBA-champion Los Angeles Lakers as leading contenders in the World Team of the Year category along with the Australian men's cricketers, Bayern Munich Football Club and Formula One racing car constructors Ferrari.

A year ago, Marat Safin won the World Newcomer of the year award. This year, both 2001 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Andy Roddick and 2001 French Open finalist Kim Clijsters are nominated in that category.

There are a total of seven tennis nominees for the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards:

-Jennifer Capriati, World Sportswoman of the Year
-Venus Williams, World Sportswoman of the Year
-French Davis Cup Team, World Team of The Year
-Kim Clijsters, World Newcomer of The Year
-Andy Roddick, World Newcomer of The Year
-Goran Ivanisevic, World Comeback of The Year
-Esther Vergeer, World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability (wheelchair tennis)

Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, a group of 42 sporting legends, 13 of which are in New York including Edwin Moses, Boris Becker, Bobby Charlton, Sebastian Coe, Kapil Dev, Emerson Fittipaldi, Kip Keino, Nawal El Moutawakel, Robby Naish, Ilie Nastase, Morne du Plessis, Hugo Porta and Daley Thompson announced the nominations a day after they rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange and laid a memorial wreath at Ground Zero where the World Trade Center once stood.

The Academy Members had also visited two Laureus Sport for Good New York projects — Sutton Gymnastics Inner City Games and the Midnight Basketball League — both of which are backed by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. It was also announced at the New York Athletic Club today that 400 metre track legend Michael Johnson, who won five Olympic titles and nine world championship gold medals during his illustrious career, had been unanimously voted on to the Laureus World Sports Academy as its 43rd member.

The eventual winners of the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards, as voted upon by the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be unveiled during a television ceremony staged in Monaco's Grimaldi Forum, under the High Patronage of Prince Albert of Monaco, on the night of May 14th.

The Laureus World Sports Awards were established in 1999 by Founding Patrons Daimler Chrysler and Richemont, who are represented through their premier brands Mercedes-Benz and Cartier. The awards honor the achievements of the world's greatest sportsmen and women on an annual basis, and also contribute to social change through the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
