Garth's Rock (The Ledge)
This photo was taken in the wee hours of the morning on a crappy disposable camera so the light isn't too good. That wave crashing up on the rocks is where you have to walk along to get to Garth's. As you can see the swell was huge on this day so we took a gander at Camp Rock instead.
Getting to Garth's can be a bit of a treck but it's well worth it. It has to be my favourite out of all the places that we went too. There are two ways of getting to Garth's.
1) Drive down the 4WD track to camp Rock. Then walk along the bottom edge of the cliffs, past the Koren Star wreck, as far as you can. In the photo opposite you can see Paul standing lower than the other two people. (Tash and Clayton I think!) You have to jump down to where Paul is and then there is a bit of a rock climb down to the area below. From here you walk around to where you can see the big wave crashing on the photo. Even on a good day it is best to time the run between waves. You never know when a big one might come along. Even on the calmest day it is best to play it safe.
2) The direct route!! Park at the top and scramble down the scree slope. It's probably about a 30 to 35 degree slope but well worth the fun. Bit of a pain carrying all the rods and stuff so don't forget anything!! Then you get to where Paul is in the photo and proceed as above!! (I feel like I'm writing a recipe book or something...)
We caught a few nice Spangled Emperors at Garth's and a some Northwest Snapper. We also had a fair share of bigger hook-ups that got away. I borrowed Pauls trusty green lead-headed jig and had alot of fish going for it. Even a Spaniard had a go at it but it was mostly long toms and cheeky bait fish. We found that it's best to get to Garth's at low tide and wait for the fishes to come in with the tide.
I liked Garth's because it's one of those places where you can see the fish. We also saw a dolphin doing a few acrobatics, a manta ray, and an impressive Bronze Whaler of about 9 to10ft in length. I brought in my bait really quick when I saw the shark...I didn't want to go skiing if it took my bait.
We also saw a really big Groper-type-fish below the surface. I mean REALLY big. We were impressed...then his grandad came out...BIG fishy.
This is on  nicer day looking down onto Garth's with the Dampier salt mine port in the distance.
This is Paul with a spanish makerel on his leadheaded jig. It got away...a familiar scenario!!
It's me!! This photo is looking towards camp rock.
Ah yes...Lance and his mighty Rockcod!!
