Flying Without Wings
Another day passed as she sat staring at the cold hospital room wall. She sat
alone, she never got visitors, with no family to speak of and no friends, she
was in this world alone. Alone at the age of 13, it wasn't right but there wasn't
much she could do about it. She didn't have anyone, except the nurses, they
were all so nice to her, but then they have to be. Her one joy in life was her
CD player. She loved music and one particular band, Westlife. They were her
favourite, one of the nurses had bought her one of their albums for her 11th
birthday and she had played it everyday since. Her favourite song was "Flying
without wings" the words seem to stand out for her, and gave her hope that
one day she'd feel something as good as what was said in the song. It meant
so much to her. Every time her illness got her down, she'd play this song and
it would help her through it.
It was so sad for the nurses to watch, for the young girl was born with cancer,
and even though she had been through many different operations, nothing was
going to get rid of it, and it would only be a matter of time. Amy was her name,
she had been in the hospital since she was born, her mother passed away just
after she was born, no one knew who, or where her father was, and she had no
other family. The nurses were the closest to family she had. One in particular,
Rose, the one who had bought her the CD. She had become so close to the child
that her heart broke every time she saw her, knowing that she probably wouldn't
be on this earth to see her next birthday. Many times she'd leave her room crying
as Amy has made her listen to a verse in "flying without wings" and
telling her that she'd be happy like that one day. She had to do something for
her, she knew one thing that would truly make her day. She got on the phone
right away trying to get a hold of Westlife record management. She was given
a series of different phone numbers but no one could help her. She was about
to lose all hope when she dialled the last number. It was the right one, she
explained to the record company about Amy's situation and asked if it would
be possible for the band to visit her, they said that they had no problem with
this, but that only one of the band was available. That member just so happened
to be Shane, which was Amy's favourite. She booked all the details. He was going
to come the following week, she just hoped that Amy could hold on that long.
The day came and Amy was sitting alone in her room listening to her album again
when she heard a tap on the door, she turned the music off so that she could
answer. The door opened, she couldn't believe it, her face lit up with a huge
smile as she saw Shane standing in the doorway. He sat down in the chair next
to her bed and started to talk to her. She could hardly say a word to him, she
was just so shocked and overwhelmed that he had come to see her. He spent the
entire day sitting by her side, he listed to her speak about her life, her illness.
His heart melted for her, he could not even begin to imagine what it would be
like to grow up like that. He almost broke down when she told him that "flying
without wings" was her favourite song, because one day she'd have someone
who loved her that much. He didn't think the smile on her face could get any
bigger until he asked if she wanted him to sing to her. He laughed as she nodded
her head wildly. He began singing
"Everybody's looking for that something..." he looked round to see
Rose standing at the door with tears rolling down her cheeks. He reached Marks
part and stopped, he patted Amy on the arm.
"why don't you sing Marks part" he said smiling. She looked up at
him, her pale face full of joy, she then started to sing Marks verse, her voice
was so delicate, emotion cut through him, almost not allowing him to sing the
next part.
The day flew past so quickly, he didn't want to leave but knew he had to, he
hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Just as he was about to leave Rose
came in with a camera, and asked to take a photo. He nodded and kneeled down
next to Amy and put his arms around her, the camera flashed, he waited to see
the photo, Rose handed it to him, he looked at it and smiled, he asked if he
could have one, Amy couldn't believe it, he wanted a photo of her. They both
posed for another photo, in which Rose handed to Shane. He looked at in then
put it in his pocket. He signed Amy's photo and gave her another hug and a kisses
before leaving. Amy waved to him as he walked out the door. She looked at the
photo and smiled she read what he had put.
"To Amy,
keep believing and all your dreams will come true!
Love always
Shane xxx"
She placed the picture next to her bed. This had given her a new strength for
life, a strength that unfortunately didn't last. Her health deteriorated over
the weeks, until she only had a matter of hours left. With her last ounce of
strength she managed to put her CD on, she shut her eyes and concentrated on
the music, and as the music got fainter she tried hard to focus on his voice,
the voice that had helped her many times before. She could no longer feel the
pain, her vision became distorted, much like shattered glass, darkness came,
she was used to this place. The voice still played on in her memories as life
slowly slipped out of her reach.
Little would he ever know that, that brief moment that they had shared made
her so happy that she no longer feared death, as she now knew what heaven would
be like.
