Directions:  You will be creating a handout for the archaeological convention that explains how ziggurats were created and what they were used for.  You will use Microsoft Word or AppleWorks to create your handout. You must answer these questions somewhere in your handout.

 

 

1.      Go to http://www.mesopotamia.co.uk/ziggurats/story/sto_set.html and read the “story” and “explore” links.

2.    Answer these questions

a.      When did Mesopotamians start building temples?

b.     Where has one of the oldest temples been found?

c.      What are mosaics and niches and why are they important to ziggurats?

d.     Why did Sumerians build high temples for their gods?

e.      Who began building ziggurats?

f.       In what cities were famous ziggurats found?  To which gods were they dedicated?

g.     What happened to the ziggurats?

3.     Click on the picture of the ziggurat under the “explore” link.  What are the different parts of a ziggurat?

4.    Click the “challenge” link and play the game.  How were ziggurats made?

5.     What do ziggurats tell us about Mesopotamian culture?

6.     Include in your handout, a picture of what a ziggurat looked like in Ancient Mesopotamia and a picture of what ruins look like.  You can look at the following sites for help:
