Library Services/ Programs

Books

Over 200,000 adult and childrens books are held by the Whoville Public library. These include many fiction, non-fiction (cooking, crafts, sports etc) and reference materials. The loan period for books is two weeks. Library cards are free of charge.

Inter-branch and Interlibrary loans

An inter-branch loan service is available for books held at different locations within Wholand. An interlibrary loan service is available for books not owned by this library region.

Magazines and newspapers:

Library users have access to a wide variety of magazines. Back issues of magazines within the past year can be borrowed - the current issue is held for in-library reading. Examples of popular magazines held by the library in its various branches are: Good Housekeeping; Consumer Reports; Vogue; Canadian Geographic; Discover; and Popular Photography. Local newspapers as well as some national and international newspapers are available. The selection of newspapers and magazines varies from branch to branch.

Videos
Videos are available by request at all library branches and bookmobiles. Documentaries, children's and "how-to" videos are among those held by the library. A special video-by-mail service is available for bookmobile users. Find out about registering for a video card.

Reference Services
Looking for information about a particular subject? Our staff will be happy to assist you in locating the materials you need. A wide variety of reference materials (including federal and provincial government documents and an extensive pamphlet file) are held by the Cape Breton Regional Library. Available information varies from branch to branch, however, all materials though are available for loan between branches.

Talking Books
Talking books are available to all people who have a disability that prevents or makes it difficult for them to read books in conventional print. Ask for a "Talking Book Application Form" at your local library branch. (For those patrons who are unable to pick up the talking books at their library branch, a special mail service is available.) The library collection also contains audio books available to all members.

Books by Mail

Books by Mail sends books, magazines and talking books free of charge to the mailbox of any resident of Halifax Regional Municipality who lives more than 10 kilometres from a library branch, or who is physically unable to visit a branch. There is no charge for return postage.

Materials are available in regular print, large print, or talking book formats.

Popular fiction or non-fiction may be selected from the Update, a free list of recent materials sent to Books by Mail clients every two months.

Library clients with a physical, visual, or learning disability which prevents them from using print materials may register as talking book users. The Library's talking books can be played on any cassette player.

Service to the Homebound

Library reading and listening materials are available to residents of Halifax Regional Municipality who are unable to visit a library branch due to physical or visual disability, a long-term illness, or caregiver responsibilities.

Qualified staff select from regular print and large print books, talking books on cassette, music or spoken word cassettes and CDs, videos, magazines, and paperbacks. Patrons may also request specific items.

Materials chosen to fit your interests are delivered free to your home every three weeks, either by library staff or by friendly volunteers.

You may also ask staff to select items which a friend or family member can pick up for you every three weeks at a convenient local branch.

If you feel this service could help you or someone you know, please telephone the location nearest you or register online. Numbers are listed above.
