Kingston:
The Kingston & District Labour Council in it's campaign to help Lucy Lu has invited Peter Kormos NDP MPP for Niagara Centre and Human Rights Critic, to meet Lucy and discuss means of helping her in her pursuit for clemency. Labour council representatives and Mr. Kormos will meet with Lucy Lu on Thursday February 15th, 2002. The 2:00 P.M. meeting will focus on Lucy's plight over the past 14 months.
Spokesperson Peter Boyle , president of the Kingston & District Labour Council said” Lucy Lu has thousands of supporters asking the federal government to grant her permission to remain in Canada.” and “Our Labour Council full supports this women and we will continue to ensure the labour community and others across Canada are kept aware of this injustice.”
On November 21, 2000, Lucy Lu, in a desperate attempt to avoid deportation, took sanctuary inside a small neighborhood church in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Lu, 43, was convicted of manslaughter for the 1985 death of her first husband in Toronto. Lu maintains that she is innocent and says she pleaded guilty to escape the legal mess she found herself in after the first two trials ended in a hung jury and a mistrial. Since her release from prison in 1991, Lu has been a model citizen and exemplary member of the community. She holds a valid work permit, and has actively volunteered in the community.
Local media are invited to attend .
