5. SCOTLAND 5.1 SCOTTISH FAMILY TREES *d1601 John QUHITSONE Cupargrange, near Perth? ex TWM WHITSON (b1904),Lick, Foss, Pitlochry (1973) (Coupar Grange was an estate near Coupar Angus.-Pam ejohn6"att"optushome.com.au 2004.) The source of the material is research done in part by Messrs Miller & Bryce, professional searchers of records, Edinburgh, for Sir TB WHITSON, who lived in 1935 at 21 Rutland St, Edinburgh, lent to me by his son. Sir Thomas writes (with some editing by me of his different versions, including turning his descendency chart into a numbered system): 1931 version: WHITSON is an ancient Scottish surname derived from the lands of WHITSOME in the Merse district of SE Berwickshire. 1935 version: The tradition in the family handed down is that there were 3 Norwegian brothers who in the 9th century - the days of the Vikings - came over in their galleys & remained in Scotland. One landed in the estuary of the Tay, one in Berwickshire & the 3rd in Galloway. He who landed in the Tay was called QUHITSON as near as the sound can be spelt, although the name really was WHITSON the son of WHITE. (The name is pronounced QUHITSON in Shetland today, 1935.) (1934 version: .. landed between Montrose & the Tay, & fought his way inland to the no-mans-land between the Highlands & the Lowlands, the land raided by both. The brother who landed in Galloway was called HEWITSON & the name is still so pronounced & spelt there. (1934 version: in Dumfriesshire the name is spelt & prounced HEWITSON.) The brother who landed in Berwickshire was, & all his descendents still are, called WHITSUM. (1934 v: & his descendants owned at one time the lands of WHITSOME in the Merse district of SE Berwickshire.) Unless a family owned land it is extremely difficult to trace ancestry in Scotland previous to say 1700 & even those families who did possess land in Scotland have been handicapped in tracing ancestors & connections by the fact that all the early records were carried off by the English King Edward 1 & were lost when the ship bearing them north home again was wrecked in the Wash. Parish records are found to have large gaps. Then again The Black Death, The Plague, raids by enemies, National & Civil, are matters which at different times have caused blanks to appear. The records of Perth & Angus are no exception. It is known that there was a William WHITSON, a burgess in Perth & a Bailie who in 1375 founded a chaplainry in the New Chapel of St James,Perth. A son Alexander also a Burgess in Perth, who had property in the Speygate, confirmed in 1423 his father's grant. Alexander's son John QUHITSUM was Provost of Perth c1450, & witnessed a deed in 1461. Between those dates 1375 & 1423 the famous combat took place in 1396 on the North Inch Perth between Clan CHATTAN & Clan KAY made familiar by Sir Walter Scott in "The fair maid of Perth". In 1437 King James 1 was murdered in Perth by Walter Earl of Athole. The city of Perth was visited by the Plague in 1512, 1585-87, 1608, & 1645. Much loss of life was caused by floods in 1210, 1621, & 1740. The city was taken by Montrose in 1644, capitulated to Cromwell in 1651, & was occupied by Viscount Dundeen in 1689 - probably the most difficult period in the history of Scotland. It was recovered by Argyll from the Jacobites in 1715 & occupied by Prince Charles Edward in 1745. The descendents of John WHITSON, Provost of Perth c1451, seem to have possessed 3 properties near Perth. In order of size Park Hill, Rattry near Blairgowrie, Mudhall 1648, Isla Park in the county of Angus, & Aberbothrie, a farm near Alyth. (See *1648-1882 Mudhall title deeds 1648-1882 at 5.2 below.) The baptism records of Angus record numerous sons born to the WHITSON family, yet few seem to have survived.
