PROLOGUE:
{ Lina and Zelgadis sit in two armchairs on either side of a blazingfire.
Zelgadis sips slowly at a cup of coffee, and Lina reads an oldtome.
Suddenly she sighs.
{ “What is it?” Zelgadis queries of her sigh.
{ “I was just remembering Filia” she answers, “Ifonly the
Golds hadn’t tried to cover it all up…they really werejust as
bad as the Mazoku, in their own way…”
{ Zelgadis sighs as well. “It’s true. Theirstory
should be told, but no one would ever believe us, you know that.”
{ “But what if we tell it a little differently?” Linasuggests,
“Look, this story is similar enough, if we just change afew names…”
She hands to Zelgadis the book she has been reading.
{ He skims through it, understanding soon why she has chosen thisstory before
all others to represent their friends. “I agree,we need only
change a name or two, and then it is a story, and no one canclaim any different,
but it will still let their story be told.”
{ Together, they begin to read, a Magickal spell changing the wordsas they
wish to tell the story, not of Romeo and Juliet, but Xellos and Filia.}
Zelgadis:: Two races, both alike in dignity,
Lina:: In fair Sailune, where we lay our
scene,
Zelgadis:: From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Lina:: Where civil blood makes civil hands
unclean.
Zelgadis:: From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
Lina:: A pair of star-cross'd lovers take
their life;
Zelgadis:: Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Lina:: Do with their death bury their parents'
strife.
Zelgadis:: The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
Lina:: And the continuance of their parents'
rage, [10]
Zelgadis:: Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Lina:: Is now the two hours' traffic of
our stage;
Zelgadis:: The which if you with patient ears attend,
Lina:: What here shall miss, our toil shall
strive to mend.
{The room with its occupants fades out and we begin to see the streetsof
Sailune overlaid and fading in:}
