i cradle something fragile,
delicate as a bubble of glass
balanced on my fingertips.
Any sudden, rash movement
would shatter the perfectness of "now";
i prefer to remain petrified.

But that would entail
surrendering laughter,
giving up tears,
refraining from embraces
or sharing a kiss...

i can not move because
the boundary between
you and myself,
where does it exists?
When i reach out,
at what point do
i end and you begin?

i respect your freedom,
your space...
i want to protect it
so that you can breathe,
and dread being the force
that might suffocate you...
