Nagini hissed in anger. The human had left the castle. She hurriedly slithered through the basilisk’s trails to the other end of the castle. When she reached it, she found that human missing as well. Angrily, Nagini sent out pulse blasts, a gift from her Master, to find the two. The blasts found the two outside, together. Nagini hurried to interrupt them.

Harry had found Draco outside, seemingly waiting for him. Harry set down in front of his rival. Draco looked up at Harry through the pale fringe of his bangs. “What took you so long Potter? Lets do this.” Draco revealed his wand and got ready. Harry pulled out his own wand and immediately tried to immobilize Draco.

Draco dodged the spell and sent his own flying Harry’s way. Harry ducked and it flew over his head. Both leapt to their feet. They opened their mouths but a shout from the corner paused them. Hermione stood there with hands on hips and eyes blazing, next to her Pansy held an identical position. Ron, Crabbe, and Goyle stood behind them.

“Get back inside this castle this instant!” They shouted. The two boys flinched from their combined anger. The three boys behind them were cowering and they weren’t even the objects of the ferocity.

Meekly Harry and Draco lowered their wands and shuffled toward the group. “Didn’t you hear? Do you even listen? There was an announcement and everything! You are such idiots!” Pansy and Hermione took turns launching this furious tirade at the two miscreants.

“Hear what?” Harry had the bad sense of asking. Hermione swelled and looked like she was going to bite Harry’s head off.

“Voldemort’s been seen in the area,” Ron put in quickly before Hermione could kill Harry.

“So why are you three out here?” Draco asked his posse, once again the ice sculpture.

“If Voldemort saw you with him” Pansy shot a look in Harry’s direction, “you might get in trouble.”

“Lets get inside,” Ron said. He pulled on Hermione’s arm and turned. His mouth fell open in a silent scream. Hermione’s eyes widened in fear and she clutched Ron’s arm, backing away. Pansy was shaking visibly and it seemed that Crabbe and Goyle were trying to blend into the stone of the castle.

“Voldemort,” Harry said. His and Draco’s complexions’ had turned a pasty white. Harry’s hand was clutching his wand tightly. Voldemort laughed, a low chilling sound. Pansy huddled close to Hermione and Ron.

“Do you think you can do anything against me Harry?” Voldemort said. “Do you really think you can save your friends?”

Harry growled and stepped in front of his friends, shielding them with his body. Voldemort laughed again. He raised his wand and Harry brought his up as well. Voldemort opened his mouth in readiness of blowing the group into oblivion.

“Stop!” Draco exclaimed and thrust his body between Voldemort and his intended target. Voldemort’s eyes widened and he hesitated for just a second.

“What are you doing? Do you wish to die as well?” he asked Draco.

“You can’t kill Potter!” Draco said, wavering under Voldemort’s stare.

“Draco!” Harry said. He could feel Draco’s confused thoughts. They slipped from his head into Harry’s own.

Draco turned his head to look at Harry and Voldemort took the chance to begin his curse again.

“No!” Harry said and leapt forward. His thoughts were leaving his head now too and traveling to Draco. The two could feel their minds entwining, tangling together.

A bright white light encircled them, crackling with green and blue lightning. A presence filled the air around them, filling up the space and passing through all present. Teachers were now running out the doors of the castle, shouting things that could not be heard, unable to get closer because of the invisible force that was surrounding Harry and Draco.

They pressed their palms together and their wands floated between them in front of their faces. The two lengths of wood began twisting around one another, elongating and making a spiral that had an odd resemblance to a unicorn’s horn. As it twisted, strange glyphs rose along the bottom and spiraled upward with the wood. As the glyphs appeared, so did a pinpoint of light above the group’s heads.

Voldemort covered his eyes, unable to look directly at the light that surrounded the two. The old woman’s prophecy came back to him and he thought he was hearing it again. He was hearing it again!

“Black and White
Dark and Light

Two shall hear the call

Two to one

They shall become

And lead to your downfall!”

Voldemort glanced upward and found his gaze locked there by the small disc that was swiftly growing larger. The voice was coming from it and on the last word the disc exploded outward and sent a beam of golden light streaking down. It slammed into the bubble that held the boys as their wands finished twisting into one.

Both threw their heads back and screamed as their palms began to burn with a holy light. Harry forced his eyes open and found himself floating in a blue space, he was naked but it didn’t seem to matter. Nothing mattered here; this place was peace. Draco appeared before Harry, naked like he and stripped of his years of pain. He looked around in childish wonder. Outside their place of peace, the moment had been frozen and the two newly made boys looked at them.

“We have to go back,” Harry said. His voice reverberated strangely in this place.

“Must we?” Draco asked. Harry nodded slowly. He reached out and took Draco’s hand as if they were but children. Draco took Harry’s other hand, forming a circle with their arms. They closed their eyes and a light burned within them both where their hearts would be. The lights drifted away from their chests and met between them. The lights flashed once and the two found themselves back in their body.

The assembled audience gaped at the newly formed human that was levitating two feet off the ground as it lifted its head and opened its eyes. Its hair was Draco’s white blonde color but it had Harry’s emerald green eyes.

“Harry?” Hermione tremulously asked as Pansy asked the same of Draco.

The being turned its head to look at the huddle of children on the ground behind it. “My name does not matter,” it said in a voice that spoke of power and peace at the same time. “All that matters is what I am and what I will do,” It turned back to Voldemort. “I am the Mage, and I will destroy you,” It said, rising up the staff that had once been the wands of two enemies.

Voldemort cowered beneath the fierce gaze of this avenging angel. He was afraid again. The being pointed the crystal tip of its staff at Voldemort and drew a circle in the air. The circle became solid and opened to reveal a gate to oblivion. The staff’s tip glowed an angry red and Voldemort felt himself lifted from the ground.

“No!” he screamed as he was thrown through the portal. His scream was abruptly cut short as the gate slammed closed and swirled to nothing. All eyes turned to the Mage.

“My purpose is finished,” it said and shut Harry’s eyes. It began to glow inside and turned transparent. Within it they could see the outlines of Harry and Draco. The Mage shimmered and began to dissipate, forming a small circle over the crowd’s heads that pulsed as if with a heartbeat. The staff shrank and unwound, becoming two wands once again. Harry and Draco’s forms became more distinct and they sank back to the ground.

The boys lay still on the ground, not moving or even breathing as the last of the Mage dissipated. All eyes turned to the glowing sphere over them. Slowly it drifted down to hover over the still forms. It flashed and broke into two smaller spheres, one green, and one blue.

The green sank down into Harry’s chest as the blue did the same over Draco. As one the boys took a breath. The assembled let out a collective breath they hadn’t known they were holding. Harry’s eye fluttered open and he turned his head in Draco’s direction. He found the steel blue eyes already watching him. The steel faded from Draco’s gaze and he smiled tentatively. Harry’s own stony emerald turned to a more soft bright moss color as he smiled back.

Hermione let out a sob and ran to them. She hooked an arm around each of their necks and hugged them close. “You great stupid gits,” she sobbed, the tears streaming down her face. Pansy sank to the ground next to an open mouthed Ron.

The crowd exploded into action and noise. Dumbledore leaped into the air and shouted “Yahoo!” He ran over at a speed that defied his age and pulled all three young people up at once. He took Hermione’s hands and danced around in a circle.

Madame Pomfrey came bustling over demanding all sorts of things of Dumbledore, Harry, Draco, and the entire crowd of celebrators. People generally ignored her and joyfully danced on the lawn. The only calm was around Harry and Draco. They knew that no matter what might happen, they shared a bond now that could never be broken.

So as the wizarding world celebrated Voldemort’s demise, Harry and Draco quietly celebrated their own private victory over evil.
