She let the ache grow
deeper
She let the ache grow deeper
With each crashing of the wave
Couldn’t swim against the tide
When a hundred arms were reaching for her
Ignoring the pleas and the cries of the needy
As the crevice on which she perched
Bled into a deep, black ravine
She let the ache grow wider
With each step she couldn’t take
Across the perilous mountain range
When a thousand voices were screaming
A warning she didn’t hear, wouldn’t listen
As she wavered on the edge of consciousness
Before her the darkness she’d glimpsed
In tides, in dreams, in the quiet of dawn
The peace of twilight.
She wanted it to stop, the ache.
Couldn’t see a clear path anymore when she awoke
All that remained was the pain
Of a life not lived, of a friend she’d lost
A reflection on a still lake which looked away
When she cast a stone to disrupt the memory
Someone was waiting for her,
Someone must see.
Someone would know.
If she turned to them in sorrow
Would they understand her pain?
She let the ache grow deeper
With every breath she took
Someone would notice. Someone would look
