Type of Ships
Barque
3 or more masts,
with square sails on
all but the aft masts.
Barquentine
3 or more masts with square sails only on the fore masts.
Brigantine
2 masts, with square sails only
on the first mast.
Brig
2 masts, with square sails on
both masts.
Fully-Rigged Ship
A minimum of 3
masts, all of them
fully square rigged.
Staysail Schooner
2 or 3 masts with foresails,
triangular sails between
the masts and a big Bermuda
sail on the aft mast.
Yawl
2 masts, the front one higher and the aft mast behind steering position.
Ketch
2 masts, fore mast
high, aft mast ahead
of steering position.
Schooner
2 or more masts of equal size, or the aft mast is higher.  Can also have square sails on fore mast, or be gaff rigged on both masts.
Cutter
1 mast, with
2 or more
foresails.
Sloop
1 mast, with
1 foresail ahead
of mast.
