The Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town, like other clubs, faced the
grim possibility of losing rich information on projects and human resources as
the years progressed. For example, not many persons had access to our history as
it relates to our formative years and not many current Kiwanians know of major
projects undertaken over the years. Many cannot conceive what these projects
looked like prior to or while being undertaken, nor who were the stalwart,
committed Kiwanians, many no longer with the club, who undertook these projects.
Quite simply, these Kiwanians were evaporating on the horizon of time. In
essence, many newer members were provided with an oral commentary on earlier
projects on select occasions, and many valuable photos left with the members who
retained them on their departure from the club.
Technology has made the world a smaller place. The internet
and the opportunities on offer are not being exploited. Some of us encouraged
the increased use of email, and to this day, we still have Kiwanians reluctant
to, or unwilling to explore the benefits of this phenomenon. The 21st century in
on us and our club must grasp the opportunities that exist and move ahead
technologically. The world-wide-web is an excellent medium for marketing the
club, for archiving pertinent information, and to communicate, gather and share
information on our club, other clubs, our community, for research, fun, etc.
We have attempted to provide useful links to sites rich with
information on Kiwanis family, email contact to other clubs’ presidents and our
Division’s Lieutenant Governor. In fact, we have included a lovely portrait of
our LG so that individuals may appreciate with whom they are communicating. And
let us not forget our children. We have included a few popular links to websites
adored by children.
Today, many of us are proud that we have taken the bold step
to launch our website. Whilst it is the brainchild of this president, let us not
lose sight of the future benefits we may derive from it. It is my intention to
eventually have photos of all our previous presidents, living and deceased, more
photos of some of our more memorable projects, photos of our fellowships with
family and friends, our functions, etc. I will continue to encourage those
Kiwanians who have a demonstrated gift of writing to document our past
achievements and future projects for posting on the website.
Committees are encouraged to submit details of upcoming
projects way in advance of implementation, for posting on the web. It is my
desire that visitors to our website will be provided with a wealth of
information about Kiwanis in general and our club in particular. We have placed
some emphasis on our nation and the actual playing of our National Anthem can be
accessed from our website by simply clicking on the Rodney Memorial picture on
the home page or the Jamaican flag on the Community Links page. The words of the
anthem may also be found on the latter page.
Persons desirous of joining the Kiwanis family will find a
link that provides all the information they may need to aide their decision.
Tremendous work has gone into improving on the original web
template. The site is incomplete but fully functional. Visitors are encouraged
to sign our guest book and to leave honest feedback that is crucial for
continued improvement.
Finally, thanks to those persons who provided support,
contributed photos, articles, etc. and assisted in other ways. Your time and
efforts are truly appreciated.
