White-crowned
Sparrow
The
conspicuous black and white striped crown is the trademark of this
sparrow, which is common in fields and parks in the Lower Mainland, as
well as in the backyard of many residences.
Some birds stay in the region throughout the year, while some
migrate to the north for breeding in spring and summer.
In the fall through early spring, they are frequent visitors to the
ground under backyard feeders. In
the spring and summer, they seek the cool breezes around the water’s
edge or at higher elevations. They often sing from atop high perches at the edge of the forest or in
an open field. Their
song, which consists of a thin note followed by a trill, varies to a great
extent between individuals, but is quite recognizable.
