The coastal highway from Chennai south to Pondicherry has become a toll road. The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company has taken over development and and maintenance of the East Coast Road connecting Chennai and Pondicherry via Mahabalipur. |
TNDC has established a Public Private Partnership for the 113km highway which is of good quality but caters for a variety of short and long distance traffic. |

The level of tolls has attracted some criticism, with suggestions that poorer users have been priced off the road. There has been some suggestion of an impact on tourism, although the volume of tourist traffic was part of the rationale for the introduction of the tolls. |
