Indon military chief calls for probe into Aceh governor
Indonesia's military chief has called for an investigation into allegations that the
Jakarta-appointed governor of troubled Aceh province has ties with separatist rebels.
The A-F-P newsagency reports two rebels of the Free Aceh Movement, which is the
target of a major military operation, have told interrogators they had met governor,
Abdullah Puteh, several times and allegedly received cash.
The Kompas daily newspaper quoted the armed forces commander, General
Endriartono Sutarto, as saying he would investigate to determine if there's any truth in
the claims.
Governor Puteh is currently being investigated for alleged corruption in the purchase of
a 1.3-million-dollar Russian helicopter for Aceh's provincial government.
He denies any wrongdoing.
In July, President Megawati Sukarnoputri suspended Puteh from most duties while he
is being investigated.
