Bashir charged with Bali bombings
Indonesian prosecutors have charged Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir with
involvement in the nightclub bombings in the resort island of Bali which killed 202
people.
He could face 20 years in jail or life imprisonment for involvment in "a sinister
conspiracy".
A 65-page charge sheet accuses 66-year-old Bashir of planning or inciting others to
terrorism or helping them carry out an "explosion which endangered or cost the lives
of others".
Prosecutors linked Bashir with the Bali bombings by detailing a conversation in
August 2002 he had with Bali bomber Amrozi, in which Amrozi asked the cleric's
permission to "hold an event in Bali".
More than 30 people have been sentenced over the Bali attacks and three key
bombers, including Amrozi, have been sentenced to death.
