Indonesian president may ban Jemaah Islamiah
Indonesia's new President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, says he will outlaw a group
suspected of links to al Qaeda-linked, if its existence can be proved, and if its
members are involved in terrorist activities.
The Jemaah Islamiah group has been blamed for various deadly bombings in
Southeast Asia.
In an interview with Time magazine, Mr Yudhoyono says he will review steps being
taken to deal with terrorism and with Jemaah Islamiah.
He says this review would include Islamic boarding schools suspected of having links
to terrorist groups.
President Yudhoyono has given no details on how Jemaah Islamiah's existence would
be proven, and whether it would require a court ruling.
His comments come two days before a militant cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, faces trial
on charges of leading Jemaah Islamiah, and involvement in two deadly bomb attacks
in Indonesia.
The Bali bombings in 2002 killed 202 people, while a strike at a luxury hotel in the
capital, Jakarta, last year left 12 people dead.
