THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS - Report No. 450
1. 17 YEARS POSTULATED FOR SECRETARY GENERAL FKM - On October 29,
2004, the prosecution at the Ambon District Court postulated 17 years imprisonment
for FKM Secretary General Moses Tuanakotta. He was accused of illegally holding a
ceremony of the so-called Sovereign South Moluccas State (RMS) on occasion of the
54th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the South Moluccas on
April 25, 2004 (see reports 419 sqq.). This ceremony had taken place at the front yard
of the house of FKM (Front Kedaulatan Maluku) leader Alex Manuputty, who is
currently in hiding in the USA. On learning of this sentence Moses asked for an
increased punishment if only those that had joined him in this separatist ceremony -
about 200 people - and now were in detention, might go free.
2. RECONSTRUCTION OF HOUSES - Various villages on the islands of Ambon
(Ahuru), Saparua (Sirisori Amalatu), Haruku (Kariuw) and elsewhere, are bustling of
activity where residents' houses are being rebuilt either by the government or by the
people themselves. The allotted funds are very moderate, so that only simple
dwellings are being produced. We attach a photograph of reconstruction activity in
Ahuru, a village on the outskirts of Ambon city.
