THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS - Report No. 449
BOMBS FOUND AT MARANATHA CHURCH COMPOUND – After on October 21 a
bomb was found near the Protestant Maranatha church in the centre of Ambon, two
days later, in the evening, a bag with 15 home-made bombs was found in one of the
dressingrooms of the Baileo Oikumene building, adjacent to the Maranatha church.
While reporting to the police, local civilians put the bombs outside, between the
Baileo building and the church. The police came and took control over the explosives.
It is not clear what scenario this affair is part of. The devices were low-explosive and of
very simple composition. They needed a fuse to be ignited, and this could not
possibly be done simultaneously for all 15 bombs.
On October 25 a bomb threat was received at the Bank Modern Expres, city of
Ambon.
Police Chief Commander Brig.Gen. Aditya Warman says he is convinced that certain
persons in Jakarta hire individuals in Ambon to carry out these terrorist acts or
threats, hoping – for whatever reason – for a resumption of the Moluccas conflict.
