FKM/RMS prisoners beaten up by BRIMOB from Java

(16-11-04 FKM/RMS)

The chronology of the beating of FKM/RMS prisoners by a special force of the police (BRIMOB) from Eastern-Java in the Prison of Negeri Lama Ambon-Maluku at Thursday November 11th 2004.

On Thursday November 11th 2004 at 4 p.m. Local Moluccan Time an incident happened in the prison of Negeri Lama, Ambon at which some activists and members of the FKM for the RMS were beaten up. The following occurred.

It was 4 p.m.; regular visiting hour. People arrived to visit their brothers and sisters (out of longing) or to bring food for their family.

The enormous amount of visitors was a striking aspect that day. Due to this situation the BRIMOB did not give the visitors permission to enter the prison. The food taken by the visitors was collected. On this particular day most of the visitors came to see the activists, members and sympathizers of the FKM/RMS.

The prison servant, mrs. Yenni, announced that the prison guards were not present because they were attending a training. Therefore a new rule was implemented. The visitors were not allowed to enter the prison -for any reason- as long as the guards were absent. This rule started from November 11th 2004 at 4 p.m. local Moluccan Time.

After mrs. Yenni's announcement, mrs. Malawau/Soumokil bombarded her with questions which led to a heated discussion between these two women. Eventually a commotion arose. All of the food brought by the visitors was scattered around and thrown on the floor. This led to a confrontation between the prisoners, the prison staff and the BRIMOB.

These quarrels did not end until 6 p.m. local Moluccan Time. At this moment the prisoners could no longer control themselves. The prisoners got into a big fight which made the BRIMOB start shooting in the air with organic weapons to calm down everyone.

As a leader, the Secretary General of the FKM, Moses Tuwanakotta, did not remain quiet and made a strong attempt to restrain the anger of all of his people (FKM/RMS activists). At the same time he got beaten up and pelted with stones which injured his head.

Seven other FKM/RMS members, Fredy van Harling, Lamberth Wattimena, Richard Huwae, Jery Kilanmasse, Matheos Sinay, Andy Marantha, Nyong Souhoken and Yusuf Sapakoly were also severely beaten by the BRIMOB.

Despite of the fact that they were beaten up and they were suffering a lot of pain none of these eight people were taken to a hospital. Neither did a medical examination take place. On the contrary, they were put in quarantine. They were only allowed to go to the restroom. This situation had a big impact on all of the other prisoners. Later this penalty applied to all of the prisoners.

After putting all of the prisoners in quarantine the BRIMOB and the prison staff started to raid on them. They rummaged in their bags and other belongings. Next, all of their bags with clothes were confiscated.

There are several aspects that we object:

1. The members of the BRIMOB did as they pleased. They did not handle according to their duty of their presence in the prison. It is their duty to guarantee safety and prevent commotion instead of causing commotion, let alone beating up political prisoners and pelting them with stones.

2. A change of the rules was implemented on purpose. The motive was to increase the emotions of the prisoners, esp. that of the FKM/RMS prisoners.

3. The food which had been scattered around and thrown on the floor is an inhuman humiliation, carried out by the prison staff and the BRIMOB. This is a very clear example of a violation of the human rights.

4. As a human being the political prisoners of the FKM/RMS are equal to the prison staff in charge and the BRIMOB. The only difference is their status.

5. In Indonesia the PANCASILA prevails, which says that the human rights and humanity should be respected. Then why do the prison staff and the BRIMOB act this way? Does this reflect the essence of how the PANCASILA should be put into practice? Or is this an application of a particular side of the PANCASILA? Are all of the people who practice PANCASILA like this? The Republic of Indonesia (RI) or the Neo Colonial Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) should take another close look at the PANCASILA !!!

The BRIMOB-agents currently on duty intent to launch a scandal; saying that the FKM/RMS prisoners wanted to set a mosque in the prison on fire. This report will be brought out today. This is a very immoral scandal.

So far the chronological outline that we put up based on a report of the prisoners who experienced this situation. Furthermore, on behalf of the prisoners, we hope that they get the attention and support; especially the pressure and urging of the international world to give back the sovereignty of the RMS to the legal owners.

MENA MURIA!

On behalf of the FKM/RMS
