Australia warns of fresh terror threats in Indonesia
JAKARTA (DPA): The Australian embassy on Saturday issued a warning to its
nationals to avoid traveling to Indonesia after receiving fresh threats of attacks
targeting places frequented by foreigners.
The statement followed a similar one the previous day by the U.S. embassy warning
its nationals in Indonesia to stay away from Western hotels and boost personal safety
measures at other "soft targets".
"Australians should defer non-essential travel to Indonesia. Those Australians in
Indonesia who are concerned for their safety should consider departing," the
Australian embassy statement said.
Warnings by the governments of Western countries have in the past infuriated leaders
in the region, who say they harm tourism without providing information about specific
threats.
Indonesian authorities warned earlier this month that potential rioting and bombing
threatened to undermine security during the lead-up to the final round of presidential
elections on Sept. 20. (**)
