One dead, two injured in attack in troubled Poso, C. Sulawesi
JAKARTA (AFP): A woman was killed and two men injured when a group of armed
men attacked their village in the sectarian-violence troubled region of Poso on
Indonesia's Sulawesi island, police said Thursday.
The dead woman was a Hindu of Balinese origin while the two other victims were both
Christians, Poso's police district chief Abdi Darma told AFP.
A group of 10 men armed with rifles attacked Dusun Tiga, a village in the area,
shooting into houses at random overnight Wednesday, Darma said quoting witnesses.
The woman died some six hours later while under treatment at the hospital in Poso
town, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the site of attack.
An investigation was under way into the attack, Darma said.
Fighting between Christians and Muslims began in 2000 and has left more than 1,000
people dead in Central Sulawesi. The government brokered a peace deal in December
2001 but sporadic violence continues. (*)
