Death toll in Poso explosion rises to six
JAKARTA (AFP): The death toll from a bombing in the Indonesian province of Central
Sulawesi has risen to six, a hospital worker said.
Saturday's bomb, which destroyed a public minibus near a market in the town of
Poso, killed two people outright, hospital staff said.
Another three people died as they were being transported to a hospital in Parigi near
the provincial capital Palu, said hospital nursing assistant Fecky Leo.
And a man died Saturday night as he was being treated for a severely damaged right
leg and other injuries, Leo told AFP.
One of the wounded had been sent to Palu for treatment and was in intensive care at
Undata General Hospital, hospital staff said.
The motive for the blast was not known.
Poso and other parts of Central Sulawesi province have seen a series of attacks on
Christians in the past year. Ten were killed in an attack in October 2003 and around
12 others have died in various attacks since then.
Fighting between Christians and Muslims in Central Sulawesi began in 2000 and left
more than 1,000 people dead before the government brokered a peace deal in
December 2001. Sporadic violence has continued despite the peace deal. (**)
