Police find nine bombs in W. Java amid high alert
JAKARTA (Bloomberg):Indonesian police in West Java province found nine homemade
bombs on a bus, National Police Chief Da'i Bachtiar told reporters in the capital,
Jakarta.
He said an investigation is under way and he had little information to disclose. The
find comes as Indonesia is mounting its largest security net in four years after
intelligence on possible new terrorist attacks around the Christmas and New Year
season, perhaps targeting Westerners.
In September, the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group used a van to bomb the
Australian embassy in Jakarta, killing 12 people, including the suicide bomber.
"From the information collected from the four people involved in the Australian
embassy bombing, we came to know that the terror network will still make attacks,"
Bachtiar said. "There are occasions that may be used by them for terror actions, such
as religious holy days or New Year's Eve."
"We have launched a special operation called Candle 2004 for all areas of Indonesia,"
he said. "Our aim is to secure people and the places of worship, and recreational
places and shopping centers."
Bachtiar said hotel security is also being stepped up.
Two-thirds of the police force in each city will be deployed, he said, declining to be
more specific on how many men will be deployed. (*)
