U.S. issues new travel warning for Indonesia
WASHINGTON (AFP): The U.S. State Department issued on Friday a new travel
warning for Indonesia, citing reports that terrorists were planning new attacks and
could strike during the end-of-year holiday season.
The department, in an update of its last warning for Indonesia in September,
recommended that Americans avoid non-essential travel to the predominently Muslin
southeast Asian nation or keep a low profile while there.
"The department reminds Americans that the terrorist threat in Indonesia continues
and may increase over the December-January holiday period," a statement said.
"Reports indicate that terrorists are planning attacks against a wide variety of targets."
It said bombings had occurred in the past during the holidays and the U.S.
government continued to receive information that the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and other
militant groups might be preparing to strike U.S. or other western interests again.
The statement did not provide specifics.
The warning followed similar warnings issued by Australia, Britain and New Zealand.
