Fresh violence claims four lives in Aceh
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (Antara): Gunfights between Indonesian troops and members of
the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) during the weekend have left four people dead,
including two civilians, Aceh military spokesman Lt. Col. Asep Sapari said on
Sunday.
Two rebels, one identified only by his initial as "IB", 22, and Nasir, 30, were shot dead
in separate clashes in Bireuen and East Aceh on Saturday, Asep said.
Troops and rebels were also involved in another exchange of fire in East Aceh but
there were no casualties, he said.
In Bireuen on Saturday, two men, identified as Ahmad Zakir, 20, and Sulaiman, 19,
were captured in fighting, while another man, Ilyas Isyak, 47, was arrested in a raid on
a suspected GAM hideout in Mutiara Timur, Asep said.
Asep said guerrillas had shot dead two civilians in separate incidents in Aceh Besar
and North Aceh on Saturday.
The victims were identified as Ilyas Abdullah, 42, the secretary of Blang Jrat village in
North Aceh, and M. Duad, 50, Asep said. (**)
