'Lady Marmalade' wins two MTV Video
Music Awards
'Marmalade' Takes All
Mya, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot accept the Best Video for a Flim award for 'Lady Marmalade.'
The powerhouse pop/hip hop quartet of Christina, Mya, Lil' Kim and Pink won two awards at the 18th annual MTV Video Music Awards.
Paul Hunter directed the video remake of 'Lady Marmalade' which won two of its six nominations, taking Best Video of the Year and Best Video from a Film. 'Lady Marmalade' was also nominated for: Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video, Best Choreography in a Video, and Best Art Direction in a Video.
This gives Christina a career total of eleven nominations for the VMAs. This is the first MTV VMA win for Christina, Pink and Mya. Lil Kim received a VMA in 1999.
'I guess the big hair paid off!' joked Christina. 'Oh, my god, you guys. I wanted one so bad. Thanks to Paul Hunter for making an incredible video. Trish Somerville for designing the whole video. You did a great job. Who else, who else? Tina Landon, the choreographer.'
Christina Aguilera was interviewed with Lil' Kim, and Pink on the Video Music Awards red carpet where they were asked if they'd work together again. Christina said, 'Of course, this is the closest I get to be in a girl group.'
Pop's diva dream team stuck together all night long. Arriving in one limo, the ladies interviewed together, sat together (right behind VMA vanguard winners U2) and presented together for Best Male Video. The femme fab four even partied together, only splitting up the gang in the wee hours of the morning at a VMA after-party.
When MTV's red carpet reporter Chris Connelly asked them how they would split up the moonman if they won, Christina joked, 'They better give us each one of our own!'
The 2001 VMAs were held on Thursday, September 6 in New York City at the Metropolitan Opera House. The show first aired on MTV.
