Smokeout 2003 Review by Vanessa.

Going to the SmokeOut was a birthday present for me. But it isn't all that odd for me and my family to drive more than 8 hours to see the Kings. We've done that 3 times this year alone. But to drive 8 hours to see the Kings perform for only 30 minutes was a little iffy..

Needless to say the drive itself was long, boring and horrid. X_x. But that isn't really important in this review, I guess I should just start the day of the concert. We got to the venue at about noon and doors weren't going to be opened till around 3pm. The guards gave numerous people the run around, one pair telling us the enterance was at gate 22 and another pair telling us the enterance was at gate 2. Despite being so early, there was many people in the parking lot hanging out.

I made this jacket that is a remake of the Jacket Taxman wore in the Full Throttle video and I bought it with me on the trip, but arriving at the venue, I was a little iffy on wearing the jacket, since there was chains, needles and a variety of other things that could be considered as a weapon at this place.

After walking around and realizing we forgot numerous things and making a few trips back to the car, my sister brough out my jacket and thus, forcing me to wear it. We got in line and it was slightly uncomfortable, since it seemed I was so out of place there.

Everyone basically stood in line in front of the gates # 1, 2, 3. And after a long wait guards got into position to check people. While waiting in line I could hear numerous people reading what was on my jacket. I was asked "What the hell do you mean the Bible is Bullshit" and I saw a few guys who had Kottonmouth King shirts and jackets but they saw me, and stared at me for a LONG time. They didn't once say anything to me, infact a few of them would walk by me, numerous times and that was kind of iffy..

You could hear the first band on the mainstage playing and their started letting people in, of course my and my sister and 4 other ladies were in the line for the Men, so we had to switch lines to get into the ladies line. Why the differnt lines? So male guards could check males and vice versa with the ladies. I told the ladies behind me Iam sorry because I was going to hold up the line.

I get up into the line, and the lady looks at me with BIG eyes, she askes why Iam wearing THAT. And I swear to her that one of the guys in one of the bands has a jacket like this. She runs the metal decetor over me, it goes off a million times. She calls a guard over and he glares at me and askes me to remove my jacket, he feels it up, the lady feels me up and pushed me inside.

I made it! Jacket and all. And I seriously thought I would be turned away and asked to put the thing in the car. I get inside, my sister inside already glaring at me, we rush to the main stage and there is already people upagainst the barricade, sadness ensues since we're there is ONE person in front of us.

And then 6 guys in front turn around and start screaming "HEY! LOOK! IT'S THE TAXWOMAN!!" O_O. I swear, my face must have been so red. They were cat calling and screaming that they loved my jacket and all I could do was stare at the ground and mumble my thanks. If those group of guys read this. I love you all. You made my day. And then Lou Dog comes out.

Lou Dog is up on stage setting up and those 6 guys, my sister, me and this couple were screaming at me to get this attention, he kind of just waves a couple of times and then goes back to his drum set. We see Denny and Doug come out to set a few things up and then the Taxman comes out, jacket and facemakeup and hair. It's real quiet, could no one have notice him? Iam screaming at him to get his attention, he was over at Bobby B's section checking out the goods and then he gets to the edge of the stage and we're all screaming now and then he waves.

This actually occured numerous times since he left the stage, and then came back on, we screamed some more, and we get his attention he waves and then leaves, but on the 4th-ish time, I must have gotten his attention from the flash of the camera, because he comes by and just glares and after a few moments, smiles and then leaves to get his megaphone and Bobby comes out to check out his stuff and then Taxman poses. *dies*

Glimps of Dloc and then we hear Daddy X. I don't even remember what he says. X_x. But he's saying something and Pakelika comes out, purple rode, smoke in hand and a sign ready to go. The intro to Suburban Life plays and Dloc and Richter come out on stage, those 6 guys, my sister, me and the couple were jumping. I have to note at the first song, Daddy X was growing a mohawk. And I love him. He is my personal favorite and owns us all.

After a while, the crowds really start moving it and a mosh pit gets started. This gets X and Dloc giddy, causing X to ramble about the Raiders and Dloc to take his shirt off. Day Dreaming Faze is played and the place is just insane. That song, if your a fan or not gets you moving. Later Full Throttle is played and Richter goes shirtless. I kid you not, we all cheered. He is lovely. And he's getting ink done. maybe giving Dloc a run for his money.

Taxman is out during Full Throttle bashing his head with his megaphone and Pakelika is with the signs like "Fuck Bush" and "No one can Out smoke me". His robe is now off, so he's dancing. SubNoise Rats is played and the crowd is asking to be divded up to numerous groups. Taxman starts to talk out of his megaphone and of course nothing cn be heard and everyone slaps their foreheads at the stupidy of this. Iam sorry, but it's true. Give him one that works. Iam sure he has much to say.

Richter is shirtless and the cameras are in his face and in the crowds face. The intro to 420 is played and the crowd goes more insane, people are crowd surfing and Daddy X comments after asking the crowd to sing along that there are tons of Hard Krowners out there tonight. More songs were played, but I can't really remember. Dloc and Bobby exchange words and Dloc starts to rap with Pak dancing, the Taxman is gone for a while but returns with Peace Not Greed.

Iam sure their were more songs played, I don't have definate set list in my head, so forgive me for the lack of order on this review. Their set lasted 30 minutes tops, but despite the shortness, they gave it their all and I swear this isn't a bias remark, but the way the Kings interacted with the crowd and how the crowd responsed was amazing. The only group to really top them Kings that night besides Cypress Hill, was Bones Thug n' Harmony.

I wonder why the Kings were given such a short set and so early in the day. Many groups like Everlast, Circle Jerks and even the set of Dj's that played during the night were literally ignored or booed while they played. This could be for numerous reasons but I saw alot of groups out there not interacting with the crowd, thus making the crowd not very responsive. But who knows. The Kings gave me my thrill and after their set I excited the crowd, insearch of a drink.

I met numerous KMK fans who appoarched me, both females and males. I was fangirled but two ladies who touched, probed and poked me and my jacket. I had one couple who had VIP access and asked "Why they didn't see me backstaged since I was wearing "that boy's" jacket." I told them I made it, and they were floored. I was red in the face, trying to explain it isn't that good and that it's so differnt from this newer verison.

The people at the KMK booth were wonderful and gave me numerous comments and told me all about the Taxman DVD's and told me to stay so I can meet him, but instead like the idiot that Iam, I went back into the crowds to wait for the suprise act. All I can say is that when Bones Thug n' Harmony came out, the place went insane. Men and Women were screaming and crying and just trying to make their way to the stage as close as they can. After that I went back to the KMK booth to discover that they had already closed up and left. Was it that late?

Overall the Smokeout was great. The venue worked out and the Kings gave it their all. Iam utterly proud of them. I love all the fans, the ones who came up to me, the ones who rambled to me, even the ones who glared at me. The security was good, turning a blind eye to what was really going on, and the bands were already.. In all honestly, I feel bad for the Mudvayne fans who came and then having their band not show up. I don't know the details on that, but my sister was crushed, having stayed in the crowd from 4pm to 10pm to see them. We left during Cypress Hill's mid set. Exhausted, tired and fullfilled. Thanks to the KMK, they played all the right songs and did all the right things. I hope all the band who were there could take note.

(Blurry Pic! So many of them came out blurred, but I have like 10 Richter and Dloc ones that came out fine.. But X and Taxman are all blurry. X_x.)
