Chapter 1: Ashanti

1

“ASHANTI! GET YOUR ASS IN HERE NOW!” I heard my mother yell.
I ran into the living room as fast as I could. “Yes Karasu?” I said.
“Go find your father. He’s been gone to long. And be quick about it.” She snapped.
I nodded and ran out the door of my small beaten up apartment. I walked slowly down the street being careful for the sounds around me. Around the neighborhood I lived in you had to watch out of gun shots and murders.
I was only seventeen; almost eighteen, and waiting for my birthday which was in a week. Then I could move out of this neighborhood and in with my boy friend, Hiead, who was about three years older than I was.
It was pitch black outside and was cold as ever. I flung my black hair back over my shoulder from where it blew in the wind. I rubbed my hands together trying to get the least bit warm from the icy weather. I heard a car pull up behind me and a voice say, “Where you going Dutchess?”
Only one person called me Dutchess.
I turned around and smiled at Hiead as he opened the passenger door to his Mustang. “I have to find my dad again. Can I have a ride to the nearest bar or strip club?” I laughed as I jumped in and slammed the door.
Hiead raised an eyebrow. “What? He’s gone again?” He asked.
“Yep.” I said before removing my gloves and giving him a long passionate kiss. He kissed back forcefully and anxiously. I knew what he was thinking. It was one of those ‘I’m horny let’s go have sex’ sort of kisses. “I have to find my father.” I said sadly.
Hiead didn’t move the car just narrowed his eyes at me. “What? So he can just rape you again? Dutchess, come on, leave this place.” He said kissing my neck.
      “Please Hiead.” I begged.
“We aren’t going anywhere until I get what I want from you.” Hiead said rudely.
I knew that he was trying to be scary but he didn’t scare me and he never would. “Move this car or you won’t ever get what you want.” I said simply sitting back in the seat.
Hiead’s eyes widened and he pulled away immediately. He drove down the street and onto the high way. “I can’t believe your mother would let you out here in this weather, let alone this neighborhood.” He said as I rubbed my hands together still trying to keep warm. Hiead flipped on the heater and grabbed my hands setting them on it.
“Thanks.” I said. I felt bad about not making love to Hiead at that moment, and not only because I wanted to either. I scooted over to Hiead and licked his ear as he drove down into an intersection. I nibbled on it lightly and tugged on it gently before letting go.
“Don’t toy with me.” Hiead warned.
“Or what?” I asked in a sexy tone. I reached down into his loose jeans and stroked right around his arousal. I smiled as I felt his reaction to my touch.
“Why must you taunt me constantly!” Hiead exclaimed as he pulled over in front of a bar.
“Because you’re so fun to tease.” I said as I put my lips to his.
“I’ll be right back.” Hiead said kissing me passionately before climbing out of the car.
I watched as he walked into the bar flashing his I.D. to the man at the door. I smiled at him and immediately thought how lucky I was. We had been dating for two years and at the beginning of the relationship, I was too afraid to sleep with him and he waited for me.
I watched as I saw Hiead walk out of the bar practically carrying my father a few moments later. He opened my door and popped back the seat pushing my father in the back. He locked the seat back in place and slammed the door. He walked around and climbed in the driver’s seat. “Lucky for us we found him in the first bar.” He said. He pulled away and drove back up onto the highway. “Must be our lucky day.”
“Thank you again Hiead.” I said sweetly.
Hiead nodded and drove as fast as he could down the highway.
I looked back at my father who had millions of different shades of lipstick on his face and he had a deep smell of alcohol. He sang lines from different songs and hiccuped off and on.
“I’m sorry for having to drag you into my family problems.” I said sadly. “I know you rather being doing something more enjoyable right now.”
“Yeah well.” Hiead mumbled. He pulled up in front of my apartment and stopped the engine.
“I’ll be right back.” I promised kissing Hiead lightly on the lips. I stepped out of the car and dragged my father into our apartment. I was sure my mother would be to busy yelling at my father to even notice that I was gone. I opened the door and saw my mom flash me an evil look.
“Took you long enough.” My mother yelled.
“Oh great,” My father began. “The woman from hell.”
I watched my father stumble in and fall on the couch. I quickly ran to my room listening to my mom scream at my dad accusing him of cheating on her once again. I jumped out my window and ran quickly back to Hiead’s car. I jumped in and slammed the door.
“How can you stand that.” Hiead asked as he drove away.
“I don’t know. It inspires me to make something of myself.” I said. Hiead nodded and sped up as he drove back down the highway. “Just think one more week.” He said putting an arm around me. “Then I can have you whenever I want.”
I laughed and nudged him in the side. “As long as you manage to hold your job.” I said leaning on his shoulder.
Hiead was a detective. Yes as strange as it sounds a detective. He owns his own business that was passed down from his wealthy uncle. He was sent to live with his uncle after his dad died and his mom went insane.
“I think I’m going to stay in school.” I said as I felt Hiead sort through my hair with his free hand.
“Why? You should be home…be there when I get home.” Hiead said smiling down at me.
“I want a job too.” I said. I looked out the window and watched as we entered a small peaceful town. We pulled up in front of an apartment that was ten hundred times better than mine. I stepped out and walked over to Hiead and wrapped an arm around his waist as he wrapped on arm around my shoulders.
Hiead stuck a key inside the lock and unlocked his door. He stepped in dragging me with him. He closed the door quickly and pinned me up against it kissing me forcefully. He pulled off my jacket and unbuttoned my shirt.
I pulled off his jacket and slipped off his shirt as mine fell to the floor. I pulled away from our kiss and looked in his crimson eyes as he looked in my hazels. “Hiead. Do you love me or am I a tool?” I asked.
Hiead let go of the button to my pants and stared at me with misunderstanding in his eyes. He picked me up and carried me into his room setting me down on his bed. He slipped off his pants and crawled in his bed next to me. “Why would you say that?” He asked planting butterfly kisses on my neck.
“I was just wondering if I was more than just an obstacle to you.” I said. I was scared at that moment. Scared that we had been together for so long and it was just sex to him.
“You are more than that Dutchess. I wouldn’t waste my time otherwise.” Hiead said as he slowly slipped off my pants. “If you want me to stop just say so.”
I looked up at him with an emotionless face that turned into a sweet smile. “I wouldn’t have went this far if I didn’t want to.” I said. Hiead smiled and pulled me on top of him.

I snuggled closer to Hiead after hours had passed and we had finally gotten tired. I knew I should be home by now but I didn’t want to leave the security of Hiead’s arms.
“Dutchess. If someone ever hurts you again…you will tell me right?” Hiead asked me seriously.
I looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. “Of course. You would be the first to know.” I said happily.
“Even if it’s me?” Hiead asked a bit more then nervous.
“Why would you ever hurt me?” I asked starting to worry.
“I can be…rough during sex. I’m sort of a…masochist.” Hiead said obviously uncomfortable.
I thought for a moment. “You never hurt me before.” I said.
“Answer my question…will you tell me?” He repeated.
“If it ever comes to that point…then yes I would.” I said. I started to wonder if he was enjoying himself during sex. I was never really the violent type and some times Hiead would cut my cheek playfully.
“What about when I cut you?” Hiead asked as if reading my thoughts.
“Oh come on. I’m not that weak. I think I enjoy it actually.”
      “Think?”
      “Okay. I do enjoy it.”
Hiead studied me for a moment. “You seem hesitant. You’re not lying right?” He asked.
“Of course not. I have no reason to lie to you. I was just thinking about how bad I’m going to be in trouble for being gone.” I said.
Hiead sat up. “We better get you home then.” He said standing up.

I climbed up the fire escape ladder and climbed through my window. I sat on my nicely made bed and reached over turning on my radio. “Rubbing little white girls on the ass.” I sang on key.
Afroman’s Palmdale was probably one of the funniest songs I ever heard and I listened to it often. “Crypts want to take my All Stars, Bloods want to eat my snicker bars.” I sang until I heard a knock on my window. I turned around to have Hiead standing on the fire escape shivering. I opened the window and let him in quickly. “I thought you were going home.” I said rubbing my hands up and down his arms.
“I needed a kiss first.” Hiead said taking me in his arms. He kissed me passionately and a few quick kisses on the sides of my lips. “Bye.”
I watched him crawl back out my window and winking at me before climbing back down the ladder. I smiled and sat back on my bed listening as the song ended.
“I’M LEAVING!” I heard my mom scream.
I sat up in my bed. “Not again.” I said.
Every time my mom left my dad took his troubles out on me, physically. He would even go as far as raping me.
I turned off my radio and hugged my knees wishing I were with Hiead again. Whenever I’m with him I feel safe. And that is the only feeling that I wanted right then. I heard the front door slam shut and my dad grunting loudly.
My doorknob turned slowly and I about kicked myself for forgetting to lock it. I watched in horror as my father walked in and snarled at me. He walked over to me, breath smelling deep of cigarettes and tequila. He watched me shiver and gave a messed up smirk. “Aren’t you going to give your old man a hug?” He asked his words a bit slurred.
“I think I’m sick. You might not want to get too close.” I said faking a cough.
He ignored me and sat on my bed next to me. He acted as though to give me a hug but instead he unsnapped my bra.
“Stop!” I yelled trying to pull away from him.
He snarled and slapped me. “Don’t pull away from me! You will respect me!” He yelled ripping off my clothes.

My father left as soon as he was finished with me. As soon as I heard my bedroom door close behind him I cried. I never cried while my father was around. I didn’t want to give him the pleasure of seeing me in pain. I wrapped my blankets around me as if they would protect me like a barrier.
This has been going on ever sense I was five-years-old, about thirteen years ago. Sometimes my door would be locked and he would simply think I ran off again…or at least I hoped he did; sometimes he would simple pick the lock.
The phone rung and I immediately picked it up knowing my father would through a fit if a boy called for me. “H-hello?” I said meekly wiping the tears from my eyes.
      “Hey Ashanti-kun.”
I smiled at the cheerful voice and sat up in my bed. “Hello Roose.”
“You sound sick…are you okay?” Roose asked.
I didn’t want to lie, but I didn’t want to make him worry. “Just going through a tough time. So how are you and Yamagi?” I asked eager to change the subject.
“I’m fine. Yamagi is going through some troubles with his parents but I think he’s doing better. Can’t wait to see you in a couple days.” Roose said cheerfully.
“I can hardly wait either. I look forward to your visit.” I said clearing my throat from my tears.
Roose and Yamagi were my best friends. They had been seeing each other without approval of their parents, but knew they could figure something out. “Yamagi says hi.” Roose said.
I could hear Yamagi’s voice in the background. “Say howdy back for me.” I said with a laugh. I heard Roose say ‘Ashanti say’s howdy’ with a giggle to his voice.
“He say’s you need new lines.” Roose laughed.
I giggled. Hearing Roose’s sweet innocent voice always made me happy. “Well I better go before I make your phone bill go haywire.” I said. “Thanks for calling.”
“Bye Ashanti-kun. And stay out of trouble.” Roose said happily.
“I will. Bye Roose…bye Yamagi.” I said. I heard Roose say bye to Yamagi for me before laughing into the phone and hanging up.
