HAVE  HOPE  MY FRIENDS,  I  HAVE  OVERCOME  THE  WORLD

Dear Paul, Rita and Friends,
Greetings on this cool morning! It was dark and cloudy when I got up
this morning, but now at 7:00 AM the north-west wind is driving the
clouds away and it is all blue sky in the west. The sun will soon be
shining.

In my prayer this morning, I was with Jesus who said, "Melvin, I am
Jesus, I love you. Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Martyrs,
St. Charles Lwanga and his 21 companions killed for the faith in Uganda.
Most were young men who had become followers of mine only a short time
before. They loved me with all their heart and refused to deny me even
if they knew they would be killed. At the order of the King many of them
were burned alive. While the flames were rising all around them, they
were praying to me and had no fear. They are great saints of Africa of
the 19th century. In these days, when there is so much violence and
persecution in the world, many Christians are suffering and others are
killed because of their faith in me. Because of their love for me, they
are not afraid to give up their very lives. They do it without remorse
for they know I will restore it to them in heaven. May the martyrs teach
you perseverance in following me. Be ready to suffer in this world for
my sake but through it all remain united to me. You will be persecuted
in the future and the church will be attacked in many ways but they will
not succeed to destroy her. She will last till the end of time. I have
given my word and you can depend on it. Have hope, my friends, I have
overcome the world. With my help you too will succeed. I bless you all."

As a Missionary of Africa, I have a great devotion to the Martyrs of
Uganda, St. Charles Lwanga, St. Kizito, St. Matthias Molumba, and the
others. Many were in their twenties and there were some in their teens.
Kizito was only around 14 years of age. Their martyrdom at the beginning
of the Church in Uganda was indeed the seed of Christians. Today a vast
number of the population is Christian. There was another persecution
some years ago under Amin, and many Christians died. Today the faith
is strong in that country. They had a great love for Jesus and they
suffered a violent death like Him. May they teach us to remain stead-
fast in our love of Jesus in the face of suffering of every kind. We
too will go through periods of persecution and suffering, but let us
keep our eyes on Jesus. He succeeded to overcome the evil one. May our
hope be strong for we have Jesus on our side.

I will have a funeral for a man of 48 years of age this morning. At 1:30
PM I will be at the Manor for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with
the people there, and I will go to Miscouche this evening for a meeting
at 7:00 PM.

May the Lord bless you all on the feast of the saintly martyrs of
Uganda.
